After-School HSC English Tutorials
The Details
HSC Tutorials will be delivered on Tuesday afternoons from 5.30pm to 7.00pm. These tutorials are suitable for both Year 12 English Standard and Advanced students. Numbers will be capped at 6 students per session. They will be held at the Open Doors Learning Hub, located at 33 Lewisham St, Dulwich Hill. There will be a short break in the middle of each session for students to stretch, refresh and rehydrate.
Tutorial Structure
Each session will have a clear focus on a key skill or body of knowledge required for success in HSC English. The schedule of skills and topics can be seen below. Sessions will include a mixture of direct instruction, sample questions and model responses, followed by time spent practising the skills covered. During the last part of each session, students will receive individual feedback with specific advice on targeted aspects to improve (as well as suggested follow-up work).
The Presenter - Matthew Hirst
Matthew has been an English teacher for most of his working life - 40 years working in both public and independent high schools, including one year working in England. He has held several senior positions including English C0-ordinator at an inner west independent school, as well as various senior pastoral roles at the same time.
Schedule of Topics
- Tuesday 6th May: Paper 1 - Section 1 the Reading Task Part 1 - reading more efficiently; interrogating the text; analysing poetry.
- Tuesday 13th May: Paper 1 - Section 1 the Reading Task part 2 - responding to questions in a structured, time-efficient way.
- Tuesday 20th May: Paper 1 Section 2 - essay writing. Planning and thesis creation for different style of questions.
- Tuesday 27th May: Paper 1 Section 2 - essay writing - structure, introductions, integrating analysis and textual evidence.
- Tuesday 3rd June - Paper 1 Section 2 - exploring the main texts and how to respond to essay questions - 'The Merchant of Venice'/Nineteen Eighty Four/'The Crucible'.

Fees and Payments
Fees per session: $70
Payment to be made via bank transfer no later than 2 days prior to session.
